I've read the tutorial that's elsewhere on afterdawn, and it was very easy to follow and detailed. But I'm coming to the conclusion that, that process only works for MPEG4 files not H.264. I've done it at least a dozen times now and put in my PSP...and nothing shows up.

The way listed on Afterdawn and all over the web is:
Quote:
1.) Find a JPEG file you want to use.
2.) open it up in a photo editing program (i'm using Paint Shop Pro)
3.) resize it to 160x120
4.) "save as" the same name as the movie file name as a .jpeg file.
5.) go back to where you saved it and change it from .jpeg to .THM file
6.) drag and drop to the PSP folder where the movie is (i my case i use H.264 AVC so all my movies go into "MP_ROOT > 100ANV01")

99% of all PSP tutorials on the web are for MPEG4 files and in those you drag and drop the new .THM files into the MP_ROOT > 100MNV01 folder. Not the 100ANV01 folder i have to use for the AVC movies i have. Does anyone know if you have to do it a different way to make thumbnail files for the H.264 AVC movies? Because i can't get get it to work for me. My PSP movie maker program will make me one from a frame in the movie but i don't want that..i want to use either a movie poster or logo of some kind.

My guide shows you how to put movies on your PSP with a THM: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/549102

Good guide, but that also won't work for me. I'm encoding my videos for the PSP in AVC H.264 format (better quality, smaller file size) Not MPEG4. H.264 videos can't be placed in the "VIDEO" folder they can only go into MP_ROOT > 100ANV01 folder.

That's what i guess is my problem. MPEG4 & Everything else can either go into the "VIDEO" folder or "MP_ROOT > 100MNV01" folder. And your guide and others like it work for that no problem. But for some reason nothing works when the homemade .THM file is dropped in the 100ANV01 folder.

I'm racking my brain trying to find a way to make it work. my PSP Movie Maker program can make me one from a selected frame of the movie...and it works fine. But when i make one it won't work...that's why i'm getting frustrated.

Here's the anwser your looking for...
First encode your movie to H.264 and make a thumbnail of the movie poster or clip but this time don't change the file to .thm but instead leave it as a jpeg(jpg) and remember the size is 160x120. Now name these files as the movie title eg.(cars.mp4 and cars.jpg) and drop them in the video file in the psp and just like magic they will appear. Hope this helps everyone and here's a link to a simple thumbprint creator.

That way works great....with MPEG4 encoded movies. I actually got it to work when i put an MPEG4 movie in the VIDEO folder. But sadly that's not helping me. since i'm not talking about just regular MPEG4 encoded movies. I'm using the more compact H.264 encoding and those can't be put in the VIDEO folder. They can only be put in the 100ANV01 subfolder in the MP_ROOT folder.

Well i guess the hunt goes on. Thank you for taking the time to answer though.

I am aware they are the same format, but they are not the same compression.

If you put an h.264 encoded MPEG4 movie in any other folder except MP_ROOT > 100ANV01 folder. It comes up as "Unsupported Data". You can't drop an h.264 video into the PSP>VIDEO folder. So your technique doesn't quite help in this situation. If it were regular MPEG4 it works fantastic just as you said.
But i like the extra compression h.264 gives so i won't go back to regular MPEG4. Just giving you a heads up. Your way does not work with the format of compression i'm using.

But what i did find is your sizing was wrong it should be 160x87 pixels not the 160x120 you were originally saying. That's way to big. 160x87 is the size that .THM files from Sony Connect videoes are. So I took a chance and made a thumbnail and resized it 160x87 then changed the file type from .jpg to .THM and dropped that in the 100ANV01 folder with the movie and like magic it worked. I guess it was your size that was wrong...because now that i'm making thumbnails 160x87 i can put anything i want in there with no problem. Thanks for helping though.
