If you have a DivX compatible player then you can use AutogK' to create an 'XviD or 'DivX' compatible file.
This guide shows how.

http://forum.videohelp.com/topic273901.html

Note that an 'XviD' file should be playable in the 'DivX' player, however the guide mentions that if you specifically want 'DivX', then the 'DivX' codec must be downloaded and installed and that in 'AutoGK', you must click on 'Advanced Settings' to specify 'DivX'.

The .avi part doesn't matter. It's what's inside that counts.
If you check your avi files you will probably find that most of them have DivX or XviD content.
As long as the DVD player is DivX certified and the files are meeting the requirements set by the player (generally, DivX=XviD), then they should play ok.

GSpot
Drag the AVI on to GSpot and try to see which codec it needs and if it's installed on the PC.
In the example, the codec is XviD and it's installed.
You can also try to play the file using the buttons.

Unless the DivX player is fussy, yes.
Many downloads are XviD and most DivX playes accept them - it'll cost you a disk to find out..

Just a suggestion but you could have probably just changed the file extension (from .avi to .divx) and burned it. That would be faster and easier and it would only cost you a blank cd to find out. Re encoding stuff just seems like so much trouble to me. You could also buy the Philips dvp 5960, throw the file (in avi, divx or whatever, it plays anything I have ever thrown at it) on your thumb drive and viola you are ready to go.

that was the first thing i did changing the .avi to .divx but when i put it into my dvd player it said data error..anyways

re-encoding the avi file just took me an hour or so...

the method u were telling was looking trouble because a drawback was that the sound was 2-3 sec ahead of the movie or so.

anyways thnx
