Ok, I'm really tired of all research resources on the internet being out of date. It is becoming annoying. I've been attempting to collect information about modchips for the latest ps2 slims. Every website I found felt a little untrustworthy.

This was the version I saw in a local store: SCPH-79001. And I found one store saying Modbo 4 was compatible but was sketchy about the features of that modchip. The modchip that catches my eye would be the DMS 4 pro with the onboard flash memory. The question that comes to mind is what modchips are still compatible. It seems as the PS2 is revised that some mods are not countermeasured by Sony. Older websites list compatibility as all versions of the ps2(v1-13) and one that would seem to be updated lists the same chip as compatible with all PS2 (v1-15).

I have been backing up my ps2 games on an really old fat with a set of swap magic discs and a fliptop. Main reason I want a chip is because I want to do the same for my ps1 games. There is something special about those old school games. They just can't make them like they used to. I also want to do it on a slim because I don't feel my laser is dependable any more. I'm have more and more loading problems and I've given up tweaking the laser adjustments and cleaning it. My Guitar hero backup used to play as well as the original where as now it is unplayable. I want a system that will work well for a long time because I do not plan on updating to the latest generation consoles until their homebrewing options become as diverse and reliable as the current consoles are.

That said I'm a very patient man. If there is no clear information about the latest PS2 hard mods I will buy a PS2 and keep it in a box untill something surfaces. Leaving me to wonder how long it has taken previous versions of this console to come up with clear modding info. Also, I'm fairly confident I can take care of the whole soldering deal but I wanted to know if anyone reccommended any electronic soldering irons/kits.

I'm here in Australia with a SCPH-79002 and have been quoted by a modchip store for a modchip installation. They said they'll be installing a Modbo 4.0 if I wanted it done.

Don't like the fact that the warranty would be voided but I guess it's my only 'guaranteed' solution. Getting hold of Swap Magic and Magic Keys for this version seems like a nightmare over here, so I think I'll stick with the Modbo when the time comes.
