I have a lite on dvd burner that came with pc,have burnt a couple thousand dvd's/cd's etc over life of burner. dvd's are starting to freeze midway through movies and sometimes cd-r's won't record all songs in mp3 format. Have tried several different dvd's mainly Verbatim and Sony, same thing on all discs. Is it time to upgrade to a new burner or is this most likely a disc error?

Verbatim are some of the better blank media. So you should be ok there.
I would start by checking to make sure the firmware is up to date for your burner.

7thsinger made a good point on checking the software. That much service I'd also make sure the optical head is clean. Dust and other residue can cause problems with both reading and writing. I use the Sony +R media and can personally recommend it. Usually it's listed as one of the better media around the forums. Sony -R doesn't get as good reviews for some reason or other.

also the burn speed is important 4x to 8x max is recommend
at 2000 plus burns its a good chance the drive may be going bad. good news is a new burner is about 25 to 40 bucks
run some quality scans with nero and see if you come up with the same spot where there crapping out

I always suggest checking things out before throwing the burner away. ;) You're right though, DVD burners are cheap nowadays.

been burning at 2-4x speed, was just using the burner that came with the pc about 4 years ago and I clean it frequently. I am thinking the burner is going bad so I am going to replace it with a new one and hopefully it will take care of the problem. couple thousand burns seems like pretty good use for $40 :)

Personally i've been pretty happy with my lite on. It's done good work for me.
I would still suggest just checking up on your firmware and keep that puppy burning! Why spend fourty bones if you don't need to? That's a couple cases of imported beer! ;)

As you mentioned, it earned its keep. A new Lite-On appears to be in order, if you've checked all the bases. Being as how I have extra drives available, I always take a few minutes to swap in a different one that's working, just to make sure.
