DMS 4 - Black screen on boot. Hit dead end on debugging.

I just installed a DMS 4 and can't get past the black screen on boot. I have performed the following diagnostics but nothing has helped.

1)All connections continuity checked end-to-end. Continuity checked with adjacent pads to make sure no solder bridges.
2)Unsoldered VUTOPWC to get back to the halfway-test mode mentioned here: https://secure.mod-chip.com/Lite/DMS4_SE_Mod_Installation_Guide_V12-V14_Lite.pdf . Unable to produce any diagnostic screen.
3)Made extremely short ground wire (10mm) to ground plane (verified continuity with ground).
4)Resoldered and rerouted D,E,X (just in case)
5)Desoldered all wires from DMS4 but left connected to PS2 - Got PS2 boot screen. Implies I have not fried PS2 Also implies no solder bridges.

I have a GH-051-32 mobo and am using this wiring diagram:

As I understand it, 02/12/32 should be the same.

If anyone can suggest what to do next, I'd be appreciative. Hopefully it's not a problem with the DMS4 as I bought it from modchip dot com (not mod-chip dot com) who appear to be hopeless in the customer service dept (Took two months from ordering to delivery. I'll never shop there again).

Update: Just took D & E to under 30mm. Problem persists. I'm beginning to wonder about the wiring diagram.
