can i use my ps2 without the dvd?

hallo all
i am new here.
my ps2 fall down and the dvd stoped working.
when i am switching it on, my ps boot to the browes/configuratio screen.
i can see 2 usb slots, i have tried to connect a usb hard disk to them, but its not recogfnized.
is there any way i can connect flash / hd to my ps2 and play games without using the dvd, or is my ps2 a trash and i can thraw it away????

the only way to avoid the laser is with a modchip and hdd. other choice is to get a new laser.
