When i try to run system restore from start, accessories, system tools, system restore, it says it is unable to protect my computer please restart and try again. Still says it after restart. If i try to turn off system restore from my computer. properties, it says system restore encountered an error trying to disable/enable one or more drives, restart and try again.
i did have a smitfraud virus a while back that i thought i had fixed all the damage from but i think it may have erased my ability to use system restore.

One of the features of Windows ME or XP is the System Restore option, however if a malware infects a computer with this operating system it can be backed up in the System Restore folder. Therefore, clearing the restore points is agood idea after malware is removed.
To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

1. Turn off System Restore. (deletes old possibly infected restore point)
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Reboot.
3. Turn ON System Restore.(new restore points on a clean system)
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK, then reboot
ok i got it fixed myself so if anyone else has the same problem....
I booted into safe mode, put in my windows xp service pack 2 disc, went to c:\windows\inf then to the sr.inf file, right clicked and then left click install, when prompt came up for location of files went to the xp disc and to the i386 folder. after it copied over the sr.inf file it asked for about 5 more but even though they were on the disc it said it couldn't copy them. so on each one i clicked to skip it and go on with the installation. at the end it said to restart. i click ok and let it boot into normal mode and it works now.
