so my 5 hours of search is in vain

i cant find a program / method that will allow me to convert an MKV file containing subs (appears to be ASS instead of SRT.

Extracting the ass file and attempt to embed into MKV again = fail
Extracting the ass file and using avidemux to insert the sub into the file on conversion = unable to convert
Converting the entire MKV file = no subs (on video or even triggerable)

Solutions?

try converting to avi then to mp4

This project is a tool to convert especially ogm and mkv files to avi, with subtitle and audio track selection, video resizing, bitrate selection and codec selection. It is centered around mencoder, with a commandline tool as well as a GUI for Windows.

OGM to avi with subtitle and audio
MKV to avi with subtitle and audio
VOB to avi with audio [SUB not tested, please post to let me know if it works]

WMV to avi
RM/RMVB to avi
MOV to avi
MPEG (all) to avi
