I need some serious help with a strange problem.

My Optorite DD0203 (FW 2.16) burns fine using Nero 6 with any of the media I throw at it, all with 4x plus (Memorex) & minus (Ritek, Princo) as well as 2.4x +RW (HP) & 2x -RW (Memorex).

I just got some Verbatim 4x +R. All the discs appeared to burn well at 4x, but when I proceeded to watch the movies, they invariably had reading problems along the first 3-7 minute marks of the video. They usually last for 1-2 minutes with very very choppy, pixelated, and many times pausing videos. But if I skipped that portion, the rest of the movie would be all fine.

Has anyone heard of this problem before?

I have a Intel P4 2.53GHz with 768MB DDR RAM running WinXP Pro/sp1.

geocean,

I use Verbatim 4x +R and +R/W DVD's exclusively. I am using an HP 200i writer and I have not had any problems. Maybe your drive is not compatable with thir disk, have you tried a different brand?

I think so; it increasingly looks like a drive issue than disc, although the Verbatim discs seem to have manifested that issue more noticeably.

Actually, it could be more to do with the disc quality. Inherently, problems arise with media in the first few minutes of playback and the last few minutes. The reason for this is the application of the dye on the disc. Where the edge of the dye, meets the edge of the plastic, and a few mm in, there needs to be very stringent practices put in place. If the dye is not applied correctly, problems can occur. This is usually a problem with cheaper media, but has been known to creep into the more Prominent media as well, in certain batches.

Have you tried the Verbatim media you have at 2.4x speed? I have noticed some minor glitches on some discs I burned at 4x in the past. This is the reason I no longer burn at 4x and don't bother getting 4x media.

The Verbatim burnt fine at 2.4x. Also some updates on the problem since my first post.

I noticed that all my discs (regardless brand) when burnt at 4x will have some inner ring gaps on the recording surface, corresponding to where the first 3-7 minutes of playback would be. However, the playback problem was seen exclusively on the Verbatim disc. None of this recording surface defect is seen with burns at 2.4x.

I recently RMA'ed my Optorite drive, and with the replacement drive at 4x, the rings are gone and so do the playback problem with Verbatim discs.

So I think what happened was there was some issue with my original drive burning at 4x, and somehow, the Verbatim discs are more susceptible to this drive issue.

Inner ring gaps tend to be calibrations failures, hinting at a problem with media. Its strange that htey have recorded ok though...
