Usually, it doesn't matter. Just select the region (1 for US) and your good to go.

1) What is the format of your burned discs? In other words, what blank media are you using?

Lots of Dvd formats:
+R/-R/+RW/-RW/Dvd-RAM/+R DL/and the original Dvd-Rom format like the original movies.

Lots of different formats there so your player is picky. It could be the format you are using or it doesn't like that format from your own burner.

I'm not sure about the Dvd-ram,but dvd shrink can be picky with +R DL because of the layer break. It shouldn't have any issues with the Plus and Dash format.Players can have issues with all those different formats.

2) What is the format of your buddies skateboarding videos?

Download this free program:

http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_..._identifier.cfm

Insert your disc-the one that doesn't work, but is burned. Open up dvdidentifier/select the drive that the disc is in-in case you have multiple drives/click identify/click the clipboard icon and right click/paste it back into your next post.

Do the same with your buddie's disc, paste it back in that post.

Dvdidentifier will also tell you the model# and current firmware version of your dvd-rw drive.

It'll look like this after you paste it into your post:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Unique Disc Identifier : [DVD+R:RITEK-F16-001]
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Disc & Book Type : [DVD+R] - [Not Available]
Manufacturer Name : [Ritek Corp.]
Manufacturer ID : [RITEK]
Media Type ID : [F16]
Product Revision : [001]
Blank Disc Capacity : [2,295,104 Sectors = 4.70 GB (4.38 GiB)]
Recording Speeds : [1x-2.4x , 4x , 6x-8x , 6x-16x]
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
[ DVD Identifier - http://DVD.Identifier.CDfreaks.com ]
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Let us know what model of burner you have the the current firmware version. When you select your drive after dvdidentifier is open, the firmware version is to the right of your model#. Also let us know what model# of your buddies burner is.

They are both plus format, and also the booktype was set to dvd-rom.That's the way I set all my backups. That usually gives the highest compatability rate. Booktyping-also called bitsetting: You're altering the plus format and making it look more like the highly compatable DVD-Rom format. It actually fools stand alone players into thinking they are playing the original movies, which are dvd-rom format.

The skateboard vid is from a Sony +1x-8x and pretty decent media. Yours is a Cmag, +8x speed-maybe Memorex?,but it is booktyped. Booktyping usually helps on compatability. Quite a bit of quality difference between those 2.

I didn't see anything about the KLOM firmware. There's a KLON update on that link-keep that in mind for future firmware updates. That fw controls the writing strategy-and sometimes need updated when issues arrise.

First thing to do is play that cmag backup using your pc,and the lite-on drive to do the playing. Make sure that litey plays it ok.

Test in other drives-like your buddies pc,stand alone player/s,game consoles/etc. See which drive/s has problems with that backup.

If it plays in a few drives, most likely your player doesn't like those cmags. Try getting some better stuff like verbatim, taiyo yuden, sony. Or get some of those in the dash format.

By not playing that backup, your stand alone player is telling you there's something wrong with it,most likely nothing major. That's why you need to test it on other drives to confirm whether it's the disc's fault or a drive.

Stand alone players can be picky. I've seen it many times when passing backups around with buddies. I've even seen where drives were picky as to a change of the MID code- Example verbatim +4x. An old PS2 would play my MCC-002 Verbatim +4x but not the +4x verbatim RICOHJPN-R01. Both identical 30 pk spindles of verbs, but a different manufacturer's MID code that a picky player can tell.

I've also seen compatability issues between different burn engines. Take note of that in case your buddy uses different programs.

All burners are different-just like all stand alone players are different. What may work well in one burner-format/brand name, may not work well with another.

Hey everyone I wanted to add my 2 cents in on the format issue. I'm an experienced user of DVD Shrink & Anydvd & when I first started making backups of movies with an different program I had at the time I came across an issue purely by accident that may help some of you. I made a backup copy of a movie I had & then tried to play it in a very expensive dvd recorder I had, & it wouldn't play at all, so I thought I messed up somthing, but then I thought I'll try it in another cheapie player I had & low & behold it played just fine. So as an experiment & learning process for myself I decide to do a little test. I took my backup copy to a local store that had all kinds of dvd players hooked up to TVs & one by one tried playing the back up copy & I was amazed as sometimes it would play, some times I got wierd colors, split screens, no video but audio & a mix of other things, but in the end I discovered, that you could make a copy & try it in your home player & if it didn't work, don't automatacially think you messed up the copy, as it could just be your player that won't play your backup. Mine wouldn't play in my $600+ dvd recorder, but the same movie played just fine in some $70 dollar cheap player I had. Also found if you find a media that works with you burner, then stick with it. I installed a new Sony hi speed burner on my PC & it wouldn't let me backup up copies with the previous brand of media I was using. Then went on line to view specs of the Sony burner & found that they only recommended like two different media brands to use, tried one of them & it worked just fine, so now that's the only media I use & I have great success backing up 99% of any movie I want using DVD Shrink & AnyDVD. Best of luck everyone!!!

Those el cheapo players usually play everything. I picked up 3 coby players at Kmart on black friday for $10 each, after rebate. I gave one away to the gf's mom and she's playing a ton of backups on both formats and +RW.

I helped a couple of members out with that compatability issue on their $3000 + Denon player systems. A 3 G dvd player/system that wouldn't play their backups, but a $20 player would!!!!
