I'm interested in soft modding my wii to play gamecube backups, but not wii backups. I've looked around and found some threads regarding this (they use like an SD card adapter thing). However, all of the threads that I found are pretty old, and I'm worried that perhaps the firmware updates have made these softmods go obsolete.

Are there any soft mods that will let me back gamecube backups with the current firmware update (I think it's 3.1...according to one of the threads that I read). If there is a mod for this, do you guys think Nintendo will update the firmware so that the mod no longer works? I haven't been keeping up with the wii modding world...have they been pretty good about making mods stop working for gamecube games (I don't care too much about the wii games for now)?

Also...I'm not even sure how firmware is updated. Is it only done through game discs for the wii? Or does it involve online stuff as well?

At this time the later firmwares don't allow soft modding of any kind.
