PAL woes in NTSC land...

I live in Canada (NTSC) and my Mum (in Australia) has just sent me a PAL DVD for my birthday... See where I'm going with this?

How do I convert it to NTSC or convert it to a file (ripping, right?) that will play on a dvd player? I am guessing that the first option isn't possible, but the second should be.
