As the subject says it cant read DVD's. It IS a DVD and when the computer was first reformatted it worked like a charm and then one day it just stopped. The drive came with the computer and now it only reads CD's. It is a HL-DT-ST DVDRRW GSA-H20L... My bottom drive is all i have. If its of any help, both of the drve do NOT autoplay any more. And if this is any further help. ![](http://img262.imageshack.us/img262/536/picds4.th.png)

Try uninstalling the IDE controller that the drive is connected to.
This should be the Secondary Controller - but sometimes (not usually) on the Primary.
My Computer > Properties > Hardware > Device Manager , click on the "+" beside IDE controllers then right click on the Secondary and 'uninstall'.
Reboot and the drivers will be reinstalled.

I found out which one was the drive by disabling them untill the 2 drive dissapeared. I then rebooted, it found new hardware and installed it again. But the top drive still doesnt read DVD's

If you are using XP, you can try removing the registry entries below.
Before you do this you should create a restore point - in case things go wrong.
Also, after starting 'regedit', you may click 'File' and 'Export' to save a copy of the registry. ('Import' to restore)
Note that in my example, there is no 'upperfilters' entry, just lowerfilters.
Similar names with .bak or _1 should not be removed.
The software whose names are shown beside the filters access the DVD drive and may have to be reinstalled.
?Start? ?Run? type ?regedit? ?ok?
Locate the entry shown below.
And highlight {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Locate Upperfilters and Lowerfilters and delete them.
Exit the registry editor and reboot.
Note again that any software referred to in the filters may have to be reinstalled to function with the DVD burner.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

I have done everything you have suggested but nothing seems to help it. I fear that the drive wont read DVD's again untill i reformat my computer. P.S sorry for the late reply, never got around to it. But that last step did nothing, if ur still wondering

The other possibility is the drive is dead or dying.

It doesn't have anything to do with reformatting. How old is the drive, and how much use has it gotten?

It's not your drive buddy, I have a H20L too, their pretty recent drives (2006), and it works just fine for me.
I used to have a similar problem as you did, my H20L would sometimes fail to recognize I had put a disc in the drive or would take a very long time to read the disc. It only happened with DVDs.
What I would recommend is this:
1. Update your firmware here:
http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=2286
2. Make sure DMA is enabled:
http://my.afterdawn.com/alkohol/blog_entry.cfm/231/dmaissues
3. Reinstall your ASPI Drivers:
http://my.afterdawn.com/alkohol/blog_entry.cfm/231/dmaissues
4. Make sure your not running/using any programs that control/override your DVD Drive permission settings, uninstall/overwrite your ASPI drivers or in general mess around with your driver settings.
Example's inlude ANY Roxio software, Nero's InCD App., Nero DriveSpeed, etc...
Hope this helps! Don't give up..
