I was intrigued to read (so intrigued I can't remember where) that Sony actually issue software - but I suspect it's firmware - which allows 2X drives to burn at 4X, 1 X at 2X etc. Unfortunately it is only for ide internal drives (I think).

I have a Sony DVD RW DW-U50A in my Vaio FR315S laptop and was wondering if anyone knows if this can be tricked. It writes 1X on minus media and 2 to 2.4 on plus media depending on quality and brand. If slower DRUs can be upgraded to 4X, maybe DWs can too? Has anyone heard about or done this?

No info for you at this stage I'm afraid, Ol. I've had my laptop for about three months now, and been looking for a firmware upgrade since. No luck but will post back should I come across anything.
