Can ripping kill a burner or am I lucky with mine?

Mods: I hope I put this in the right forum. If not then please feel free to move the thread to wherever it belongs.

My DVD burner is a 3 year old Plextor 716-A thats still going strong. I mainly use it for burning DVD's & data files although it has also been used to read data DVDR's & playing DVD's on the computer. Yes I've ripped lots of DVD movies with it. Somewhere I've read (maybe here at AD) that using a DVD burner ro read & rip discs can kill a burner faster than just using it to burn discs & that a DVD-Rom drive should be used for the reading & ripping tasks. Is that right or have I been very lucky with my Plextor?

Hi, could'nt tell you if u r lucky or not except the the Plextor 716 model was the Mercedes of burners.

riping with your burner won't have anything to do with killing your burner, cuss you are just reading and the riping part is software, i had a hp burner for like five years and was using it for both reading and burning and never had a problem.

actually ripping is pretty hard on a drive, I use a less expensive drive to rip with so i don't wearout my Plextors

It still is for as long as the burner will last!! The 716-A was the 2nd DVD burner I bought & the only one I've used with 2 computers. The one I bought but never used was a Pioneer A108XL still in it's box....

As good as that drive is I should have bought 2 or 3 of them!!
