I'm also a +R convert, mainly because all my burners booktype and I've heard that's the best way to insure compatability. Even so, I still have some -R 8x Verbs and TYs around.

Personally, I think i achieve better results with the +Rs but that might be because I use them alot more than the -Rs.

i burn the TYGO2s (8x) at 8x and sometimes 6x the TYGO3s (16x) i burn at 8x also some burn them at 12x but i don't recommed that. if you have the TYGO3s (16x) make sure you have up to date firmware for your drive/burner to support them. quality wise ( TYGO2 vs TYGO3) there equal.

I'm out of my league here, hopefully aabbccdd can explain or someone else, but I've had better results with the 16x media than the 8x (I've mainly got Litey 20x dirves) which is why I prefer the 16x media.

I'd say it's a pretty close call from my experience between -R & +R but compatibility and maybe in my own little world I think the +R booked are a little bit sharper. Correct me if I'm wrong and if it's alphabet i want the correction by Adriana LOL Chris

i booktype all my +r also. but lately the +r price are a little higher than -r. my brother only uses -r.. i guess if you have a newer stand alone player it really wont matter.. i have an older one that is fussy and a new one that plays everything i put in it.

the other crazy thing is that none of my boxes are check for booktyping. but the log alway says it is booktyped.
i use shrink, nero, or just recode sometimes. i gave up on try to figure out how there where getting changed.

@born2ride,

I think Shrink and Recode have an override setting for booktyping incase it isn't set in your burner's firmware.

Alot depends on your burners. What do you have???

i must of missed it somewhere but you burn the 8x ones at 8x and the 16x at half speed. why not at 16x? have you had play back issues over 8x?
i have always burt a half the disc speed. never really played around with faster ones..

Cost-wise between the -Rs & the +Rs I think might be because the rest of the world has caught up or passed the US in usage. Most of the rest of the world use mainly the -R format.

Hopefully those are SATA drives or connected via a RAID otherwise you might have problems. (Haven't checked I don't immediately recognize them).

I've seen the quality go down going above 8x except for the Lg on the printable Verbs 16x at 12x but even then it's a hit or miss 8x comes out the best for me no matter which burner or media and the difference between burn times isn't worth it to me. The old Plextor just likes to scoot along at 4x and thats the only reason i buy the 8x, tillif and when it ever dies.Chris

Yep,

You have the most current firware that I can find. I looks like your drive is an OEM for Dell. I feel sorry for you. I hate Dell.
I've hated Dell since I found out that they special order their motherboards and power supplies and ahve a power lead on the standard connection switched. If you don't have their power supply(i.e., get an industry standard one off the shelf), you'll fry the motherboard.

My brother has one and had to go back to Dell for a replacement floppy drive. Cost him $35 US instead of a generic for $10.

I've done a few burns (300+) on the Valueline and never had a problem caused from the disc, JUST me doing something wrong. ;)

I've also used both Premium and Valueline with the results NOT worth mentioning. To inconsistent as far as which one has the better scan, benchmark or playback to make a difference in my opinion.

As herrick has said docTY and JoeRyan are the authorities in this arena but there are a few of us that can at least comment from our limited experience. :D I think that binkie7 could shed some light as well, she does quite a few burns herself. :) And of course aabbccdd has done his share of burning on valueline. :P

I have burned about 1500 TY valueline printables and they have been very reliable. If you get them from SMS any that are not good can be returned with full payment and no questions asked. You just have to call and get a return number from them.

Well both my benq1650s love 8X TY T02s(+Rs). I still have many left and would buy more if I could find them. They also love the 16X Verbs +Rs. BCIC firmware. I have yet to have a coaster with a TY T02 so far as I can remember.

Thanks Chris, I'll check them out. My wife thinks I have enough as it is. Yesterday in Sam's, I was looking at some Sony's to see if any of the 8X were left-no- and she let me know.

Edit: BTW, Best Buy has Verbatim +R DL 20 for $29.99 this week. And Sony +Rs 100 for $22.99

Txs greensman for dragging me in :)
Yeah I do a lot of burns but I've never tried the value line - I always get the premium line. So no experience with the value line at all.
From what my old memory remembers the value line just don't meet Taiyo Yuden high standards and are they consider them their 2nd rate media.
Even what they consider their 2nd rate media is better then what some companies consider their 1st media :)
I think somewhere in the 1st Taiyo thread the doc went into what that diff in standards was.

binkie7 You are correct in the First thread Doc did get in the immortal words between Premium and Value line I believe around the Benq era.My first purchase was Premium and after the Docs take on Valueline thats all I've used since. I know at the time burning and comparing and scanning whether from Plex tool or Nero the results if any difference at all would've been very minor for me to stay with the Valuelines over the premium.I buy all printables and +R. The only coasters if any would have been my doing. Chris
I also think Ty's 2nd rate standard matches or beats first class standard on my other media
