Well, the consequences of putting in a mod chip is you void the warranty and you can ruin your wii (if you do a bad solder job).
As of right now, I would assume that anyone with a wiikey will not be able to play a original US version of brawl when it is released (since a NTSC-J wii cannot play an original japanese version of brawl). Hopefully, the wiikey team should have a new firmware in the next few weeks that will fix the problem of playing the original, and no, the new firmware will not cost you anything.

Hmm... I keep getting conflicting choices with regards to 15% or letting the update run all the way through. My inner gut says "15% flash update + Power cut = Bad" but my brain says "Japanese update + English Wii = x/0"
This update seems to be fairly minor, and I already have 3.1U on my Wii, so I'm thinking that if I ran the update all the way, I would just have the two extra Weather and News channels, correct?
I just need some more input is all before I make a final decision when I do this.

I been playing SSBB DVD5 on my d2c modded wii and I know movies on the dvd5 version will crash. The game works perfectly untill after the battle, my game crashes before getting to the result screen.
I get a white screen with a green error. but whats weird is that happens 80% of the time, the other times it doesnt crashes.
help plz

just to update... i have downloaded the dvd9 version (fulll JAP game) and it works flawless on my ntsc-u wii 3.1u version and wiikey with 1.9g update on it. i have updated my wii (100%) with the jap game and i only got dup channels that i really dont care of em... i can access my settings and my other games play nice too...
PS this game rocks!!!! i have already beaten SSE with 88% and unlocked a bunch of characters...this game owns!!! a lot of levels too... been my fav one the metalgear solid one. LOL CYA guys

Attention!!!
There is a RUMOR That there is a Wii Repair Disk thats been leaked from Nintendo that will fix Firmware problems. That would INCLUDE brick and semi brick if its true.
Keep up with the news, its HUGE if its true.

Such as out-of-region updates? There are loads of people out there with bricks and semi-bricks that took all the necessary precautions and still got unlucky. I guess lightning just strikes a whole lot more than you thought.

Yup, let's just be a total dick while I'm trying to get some help on something before I take apart and somehow ruin a $250 piece of equipment. People are saying different things about this, so I'm trying to get as much information as I can on this subject.

I don't think people have been saying different things at all. As far as I can tell, the 15% trick only prevents duplicate channels. But whether you do that or just go to 100%, the chance of bricking is going to be exactly the same - low, but present.
In other words, it's up to you. Do you care if you get duplicate channels, or not? Both paths have the same destination.

I am trying to download SSBB the DL version, so that I can backup my real Japanese disc. The only problem that I have is that when I try to download the separate files, my download sometimes just stops in the middle at different places and never starts back up again. I know the file isn't corrupt since many people confirmed it works, and I try them and they always stop in different places. I was wondering if anyone could tell me any program to use so that I could download the files, and start them back up again even if the just quit all of a sudden.

P.S. I already have the real copy of SSBB (J), I am just backing it up.

I'm also having the same 001 error when running the game.
I have a japanese wii with the wiikey. Now, my question is, if I were to update my wiikey, can I run the english version of the update or do I have to use japanese one?

Lol, wow kid. The dude reiterates exactly what I said before and you thank the guy. I don't think it's rude to tell someone off who blatantly ignored a post you spent a lot of time on to help him with. I do think it's rude to blantantly ignore a post someone spent a lot of time on to help you with. I guess it's just a matter a perspective; whether you were rude or I was not rude. The saddest part is that I can look like as much of an asshole as I want and it doesn't matter. The only person who lost here is you because you didn't take my advice and got your copy running that much later.
In regards to Error 001, I bet that even when the WiiKey update comes out, people with the problem will still get the error. At the rate these forums are going, I doubt anyone's going to come out with a fix for it before that either. I think people are getting lazy and thinking, "Oh, when the update comes out, it will fix everything." Then again, people might still not care after that either. It's quite possible that this problem will never get fixed and that the unlucky ones that get Error 001 will be swapping DVD5 and DVD9 discs of SSBB forever. Of course, this is just speculation on my part. The update could fix everything. Let's really hope it does.

DNT5: I did post earlier about the Caravan rip having problems, but someone has finally offered to do what he can to get his self-ripped (and he says it works fine with d2ckey) iso out. Likely, if it fixes the d2ckey issues, it might also fix the wiikey issues as well. Responses are slow, but progress is being made. Although, at this rate, by the time his iso is in circulation, it's highly likely that the US version will be out... (and since I've got it on preorder, that'll be the end of fevered forum browsing for me at least)

Their patch wont prevent dup channels, it will just allow origional SSBB disks to work on a wiikey chipped wii. Currently origional disks dont work on wiikeys but backup disks do. Duplicate channels occur because of the game being from a different region, not the chip of it's firmware.

Hey i got an Aussie Wii its Pal
i have 3.1E version.
i updated chip to 1.9g.
i got the dvd9 smash bros brawl torrent and burnted it.
i updated it to max, so i got the dup channels.
i try loading up the it. loads but the screen turns of to my tv's default blue screen. i hear the wii loading things, but i cant see it on the screen. i dont knoe if it got to do with 50/60hz or putting region overide on???? cause i havent put region overide on yet...
can anyone help us ??? ;)

Sucess! After 5 days of downloading.
I let the Cd update my japanese firmware from 2.0 to 3.1
I tryed to play the disc, but no luck.
Then i read that it has to be wiikey firmware 1.9g, so i updated it and sucess!
My dvd burner: matshita uj-850s
My dvd+R dl- moserbaer india- (i thought moserbaer sucked, but it doesn't!)
Most of all! no dual channels!!!!!!!!and direct boot
P.S-i think the error 001 is caused by using Dvd-r dl, instead of dvd+r dl, and i used imgburn v 2.3.2.0
i heard that the game might start to crash after a few hours of play.. I have to hope not!

Unfortunately, I have to disprove that. it is not simply using DVD-r, my DVD+R Verbs don't work either, and I burnt it 3 times.
