Hi,
I'm about to purchase a 'fat' PS2 from my friend for $25, and I want to know what materials I need to softmod it the best, most effecient, and cheapest way (I'm on a budget at the moment).

I looked at the PS2 memory card exploit, but I'm confused what you do after you load the USB and uncrush it to the memory card. Here's some questions I have.

1. What exactly is being transferred from the USB to the memory card? The PS2 games?
2. How do you play the games off the memory card? And if you can, how many games how can stored on an 8 MB memory card?
3. Is an HD Loader or HDD absolutely required?
4. And to do all this, what materials will I need to purchase? Memory card, Action Replay/Codebreaker, and USB?

Thanks much,
Jeff

what you need for the exploit:
-ps1 game
-cheating device with usb support (ARMAX recommended)
-2mb free on memory card, or get completely new one
-hdloader 0.8b .elf file
-IDE hdd
-network adapter

yes, you need a hdd and hdloader if you want to play games without the discs.

this is how it works. in the fat ps2, there was a flaw when playing ps1 games; they triggered a buffer overflow, allowing unsigned programs to run.

on the memory card is a modified system settings file. that system file contains the ps1 cd number. when you use the ps1 game and the memory card together, they boot to a different screen; it depends on what elf file is the primary.

ps2: v7 scph-39001 - independence exploit - hdloader 0.8c - maxtor 300gb hdd

got a whole lot more to list . . .

Im not too familiar with the memory card exploit with action replay but I can answer most of your questions.

1. You will be transferring ps2 files (called .ELF) to the memory card
2. Ps2 games average to about 2-3gb, its impossible to put a full ps2 game on a memory card but even if it was possible the memory card transfer rate is too slow to be able to play games.
3. HDloader and a HDD will be required if you want to launch games off of a HDD. Im not too sure if you can "swap" with Action Replay exploit but im pretty sure you can.
4. Not exactly sure what materials you need, if you could give me a link to the guide you are using I can read it over.

Thanks for the response.

So is the network adapter included in the fat PS2, or is that the additional device that plugs into it? At the moment I might not be able to purchase the HDD at the moment, but which one do you recommend and how much does it cost?

Thanks.

Hold on, you don't HAVE to launch games off the HDD. You can use the good old swap method to get your games to work. This is the method I'm currently using. I transferred a code breaker exploit to my memory card using a USB pen drive. The exploit was created by me as I had to give the CD code of the specific PS1 game I had (apocalypse). On the exploit I added a Swap Magic ELF File which is the swap magic program. Now everytime I insert my PS1 game, I am taken to a menu where I can launch the Swap Magic ELF. After launching it, all I need to do is TOC refresh method to get my PS2 backup discs working. No need for a HDD :)

in the longrun, the hdd is better because you don't use the laser for games, just the trigger disc. after that, the laser shuts off when in launchELF. also, the games load way faster, especially on fat ps2's with hdd/network adapter.

only thing is that there are some games that don't run off the hdd.

True, if you were to use a HDD you would save the laser life, but if you don't have access to a HDD and don't want to spend money on one, you are better off using the swap method.

BTW, doesn't it take long to load games using the HDD as the PS2's are only USB 1.1 compatible.. (I know you said the loading times were quick)

not if you use the hdd/network adapter combo. the expansion slot can house a standard IDE hdd, and is powered by the network adapter. it's what i use, and the games instantly loads like a computer. most lag you'll see is a few seconds.

online is NOT playable from the hdd. so if you play online games, use the original game disc.

EDIT: Just checked, DNAS doesn't work with a hard drive ;)

I suggest you buy yourself a hard drive, it's really awesome. A few games don't work but many just need to have enabled modes or patches. Not having to take anything with you but a PS1 disc, memory card, and a had drive beats the sh!t out of packing all your games.

Hard drives can run you anywhere from 40 to 100 bucks depending on how big you want to go. Remember that without a modchip a Ps2 only supports something like 127gb...or is that just with the XBOX?

You can find network adapters for like 25. Look on eBay.

And there is a SLUS or whatever that you can use that can trigger over 800 Ps1 discs. If you want it, just PM me.

You can also stick with swapping. It's okay, but you'd either have to break off the front of your tray or buy a whole new case. A hard drive is way better in the long run.

Installing games to the hard drive is easy. You can even do it much faster from the computer.

no. the game will still fail the DNAS test because there is no disc present. DNAS will check if the game disc is in the tray, and since it's running off the hdd, it will automatically fail.

you might be able to get away with games that don't use DNAS, but those games are really old, most likely from the start of the ps2.

Ok, I'm thinking about the Western Digital (I think that's what it's called) 160 GB HDD for $64.97 at Walmart (the cheapest drive) but I have no idea if it'll work for the PS2. As for the Network Adapter, will the Linksys USB device work since I already have that? And for the cheating device, since I already have a USB device (not the Linksys), could I buy Gameshark 2 v1.1 or Code Breaker instead of the ARMAX with USB?

So is that basically all I need to purchase to do this exploit? I already have...

1. The Fat PS2
2. 8 MB Memory Card
3. Linksys USB Network Adapter (but will this work?)
4. USB Device

..and I need an..

1. HDD (western digital?)
2. Cheat Device (Code Breaker/ Gameshark?)

Thanks again,
Jeff

Make sure the hard drive is IDE interface not SATA.

if you get a western digital hdd, you will have to modify the network adapter to fit it. the ide and power connectors are farther apart on WD hdd's.

and you CANNOT use anything else but the official network adapter to power the hdd. there is no other way for the ps2 and hdd to communicate to eachother without the official network adapter.

What HDD do you recommend? Is there one that's at a decent price yet still effecient? And also, do stores sell the official network adapter?

Thanks.

you can only find the network adapter used at local game stores (gamestop mostly). they are $20 each.

as for hdd, i use maxtor, as sony used maxtor hdd's in the official FFXI kit. my 300gig costs $100. you should be able to find one around $100-120.

the reason why you need the official network adapter:

it powers and communicates to the hdd.

front cover is removed for slidecard switch for ps1 games (GS2 1.1 swap trick)

the network adapter/hdd then goes into the expansion bay in the back of the ps2

your network adapter won't be detailed, like mine. it will be all black like the ps2

when together, it'll look like THIS

ps2: v7 scph-39001 - independence exploit - hdloader 0.8c - maxtor 300gb hdd

Thanks for the help.

So if I go with Maxtor, would this work?

http://www.staples.com/webapp/wcs/stores...3&cmArea=SEARCH
(sorry if I can't link to other sites)

Thanks again. And another question: Is it possible to still play Ps1 and Ps2 game discs even though there's an hdd in the Ps2?

that hdd will work fine. for $15 more, you can get the hdd that i have; staples is where i bought my maxtor. basically double the specs of that hdd you listed.

i have over 30 games on my hdd, and they take up 100gigs. so if you have more than 30+, it's safer to get an overkill hdd. also, you need to know if your games are compatable being played off the hdd. go HERE and find out if your games will work.

and yes, you can still use ps1/ps2 discs. the hdd will shut off when not in use. you'll know when the hdd is in use; the system fan will spin faster. completely normal.

why patch the image when you already have it on the hdd already. also, loading times are way faster with the hdd.

you don't have to lug around all your games. all you need is your exploit disc and memory cards.

also, you can do the exploit with things easily available in game stores; no need to order online.
