This guide will show you how to install PS3RSX Binary Driver support on ubuntu Linux. it gives you limited access to the RSX and will speed up the X11 display significantly, allows desktop effects to be used and accelerated graphics for frontends only.

I have provided a Ubuntu .deb package including PS3RSX kernel module for 2.6.22-14-cell and the associated Xorg driver. The deb checks the kernel version but be sure to have the 2.6.22-14-cell kernel (uname -a).
So if you have updated to 7.10 (gutsy Gibbon) or updated your kernel to support wifi/sixaxis this WILL NOT work.

Here is the link to the .deb package.
http://www.choeursdaromes.com/ps3rsx-1.0-1.deb

First of open a terminal and install the .deb by typing:
sudo dpkg -i ps3rsx-1.0-1.deb

The package adds a line to /etc/modules (ps3rsx) but does not modify the xorg.conf. You still have to do it yourself.

open a terminal and type:
sudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf

inside the file scroll down untill you find this line:
Driver "fbdev"

You just have to change the fbdev - which is the name of the driver used by Ubuntu - to ps3, so it will look like like this:
Driver "ps3"

once done scroll down to the bottom of the file and add this to the end of the document:
Section "Extensions"
Option "Composite" Enable"
EndSection

close and save the file then restart you ps3, if ubuntu boots up into a black screen then you don't have the right kernel and must reinstall.
I'm trying to compile the modules into the 2.6.23 kernel which supports wifi/sixaxis so we can still have wifi/sixaxis support.
enjoy.

How limited is the access to RSX? Can you run games using wine with this driver? Or native linux 3D games?

wines not possible anyway since its developed for x86-64 processors. regarding games you can use dosbox to play old pc games such as doom, warcraft 2, Valhalla. i have duke nukem 3d running at 25fps so most dos games now work and are playable.
i haven't tried any Linux 3d games yet because i cant find any that use the ppc architecture.
mythtv also works great now, and some boffins have been able to use the spu's to do colour conversion to play high def content at hd resolutions.

its a small step but a significant one.

Bad news. Several reports are now stating with the recent firmware update the limited rsx access has been blocked.
