Sony RDR-VXD655 - Comcast Digital DVR STB Motorola DCT3416

Hope I can explain what I'm trying to do and ask the correct question to get help.

Just picked up a Sony RDR-VXD655 DVD/VHS recorder and I'm having a problem understanding how it should be connected to my cable in order to make timed recordings.

Using the recorder's instruction manual to make the connections doesn't help because this results in only being able to record the channel the Digital DVR is tuned to. This makes it impossible to record one channel and watch another. The recorder didn't come with an STB controller and no mention of one appears in the instruction manual. Before I had an STB cable box, it was simply a matter of setting the channel to record and on and off times.

The recorder is connected to the cable box with an A/V cable and the cable box's VHF/UHF "out" connection and connected to the TV with an HDMI cable and A/V cable.

Connecting the recorder using a splitter from the wall outlet doesn't get all of the channels I'm paying for.

My question is can the recorder be connected to allow timed recordings and, if it can, how is this done (connected)?
