Video fixing software?

I've noticed that a lot of video files I download, if you load them into virtual dub, you'll generally find errors in it which probably means it was encoded incorrectly. So I'm wondering, do you guys know of any good video fixing software? I've tried this one software called video fixer, doesn't seem to do much.

Most of these issues I feel could be easily resolved so that's why I'm inquiring. I know I could always reencode these files but I don't think it'd be a good idea from a quality standpoint.

I routinely use VirtualDubMod (files with VBR audio) to load XviD and Divx file downloads and re-save them using Direct Stream Copy - average two minutes to resave and no loss of quality because no recompression.
I've found that my DivX player prefers the output from VirtualDub to the hit or miss that is often the case.

yeah but what do you do when you just want to "repair" WMV/ASF or Mpeg2 files? Reencoding them doesn't seem like a good idea even if you're absolutely sure about the equivalent bitrate is.
