Burning mkv on dvd for backup

Hello, I've searched the forum for info but everything seemes to be about burning mkv as a dvd etc.

When I try to burn a regular mkv file with my dvd burner and nero the file doesnt play back from the dvd when I'm done?!

The videofile plays from my harddrive, but not from the dvd I burned it to?

any thoughts?

I assume that this is a data disk;just the file burned as data.
The media player should play it from either location.
If you drag and drop the file from the disk to the desktop, does it play?
