Need a hard drive to play Halo 2?

I got Halo 2 off one of my mates to play on my xbox 360 core but when I loaded the game up it gave me a message saying I need a hard drive to play original xbox games.

I did some googling and found a couple of articles that say you dont need to have a hard drive to play Halo or Halo 2 because its all ready been set in the xbox 360 emulator out of the box.
So why does it say I need a hard drive?

All Xbox 1 Needs A Hdd To Be Played. u can get a Halo 3 Hdd From Ebay For $40 Shipped

The emulator is stored on the hdd, not on the 360. That's why it's saying you need a hdd.
