I am sooo tired of those cheap lasers burning out! I would like to know if anyone has tried to substitute a Slimline PS2 drive, using a PC disk drive with positive results. I am not sure if the PS2 disc check will still initiate or not, but it doesn't seem impossible to do. Although, now that I think about it, the firmware would likely have to be hacked, as I have no modchip. Any help would greatly be appreciated.
I do have a hard drive in my v7, but I have to use the disk drive in order to boot my hard drive. It is only about 2 seconds of disc reading each time I power the machine on, however, the fact is that these lasers do not have a long lifespan. Mine still works fine, but it is my third one. Oh well, maybe I should invest in an X-Box.
my v7 is still on it's original laser, and i'm the original owner. before the hdd and hdloader (almost a year), the laser has been thrashed with hours of gameplay and dvd movies; even some overnighters. regular monthly cleanings helped keep the system running strong. no DRE's, whatsoever. and the warranty sticker still intact.
you can't substitute the laser with a different one. they're specifically designed for each revision model.

Since you only have to run boot files briefly from the drive to boot the HD, why can't you put the boot files on a memory card and boot from the memory card for the HD. this is an idea im experimenting with now but any advice would be welcome. if i get it working ill let you know. -Rel

because you still need to use the laser. you take a ps1 cd code, and put it in a modified system settings file on the memory card. when you use the memory card and ps1 game together, it will boot the exploit file.
the only way to bypass the laser is if you get a modchip with flash memory. you can then boot elf files off the modchip, instead of running the disc.
