Broken Wired Headset???

I have bought the xbox 360 and recieved inside a wired headset.
Buth he doesn't work.
Maby its just me doing something wrong buth i dont think so.
This is what i do...

1) volume of headset to the whole left until cant get further.
2) plug it into the wireless controller.
3) press the xbox button on controller.
4) turn on the volume of headset.
5) play game.

After that i stil get the music trough my tv and not my headset.
Whats wrong with it?

P.S. plz respond quick i have a view days left to bring it back to the shop if its a factory damage.

Headsets are plug and play, so as soon as it was plugged in (if it worked) the sound of peoples voices (not the game itself) would stop coming through the TV. Make sure that you have pushed hard enough where it connects to the controller that it is FULLY plugged in.

the headset is not to listen to the game through the headset, but rather for voice chatting during games to team-mates or opponents, so the music will always play through the TV and never ur headset, if u want a headset for that, they do sell some for around $79-$129 that do all audio and talk through them, some are wired, some are wireless.... they look like huge noise canceling headphones that used to go w/ Hifi systems of days gone by.
