Hi,
I'm trying to rip the Cavern Combat fight scene so my daughter can study it. I don't want her to watch the whole movie because she is only 9.
I've tried the following:
- created vobs using DVD Shrink
- renamed vob to mpg and cut out the fight scene using MS MovieMaker & Pinnacle Studio 8. They both look fine during editing.
- I tried to save in MovieMaker but it never creates a file, the time to save just keeps increasing
- Studio 8 creates an mpeg file but I can't play it with MediaPlayer

I was under the assumption that if DVD Shrink removes the macrovision then I could use any video editor to rip a portion of a movie. Obviously, I'm a newbie so I probably shouldn't assume.

Well One Problem you will have is that Regular Video editors like Studio 8 and Movie Maker do not Properly edit Mpeg2.VOB files and will allways re-encode the Video when rendering which Greatly reduces the Quality, and Video editing Forgrams Like that do not support the Dolby digital AC3 audio that is in Most retail DVD"s so you will never get any audio in your Finnished Mpeg file...What you need is a Real Mpeg editor..Proper Mpeg editors Can edit the AC3 audio and do not re-encode the Files when makeing a new file so there is No Quality loss and editing out a Small 5 minute scene will only take about 30 seconds to render when useing a Real Mpeg editing Program...You Can Just Rip the DVD to your Hard drive But with only one audio track, then Load the Vob/Mpeg2 file into a mpeg Editor like "Womble Mpeg2VCR" and cut out the scene you want and then do whatever you want with the scene Like Burn it to DVD...You Might also get away just useing the Simple editor in Tmpgenc"s "Mpeg-Tools" and there are a few Freeware Mpeg2 editors But I do not think they Support AC3 audio...well good Luck and if you get stuck finding a Mpeg editor then Message me with your e-mail and I"ll see if I can find you one....Cheers

Thanks for the info Minion.
I kept looking around this forum and I saw a couple of references about DVDx. So I tried it and I was able to rip the fight scene and the famous nunchaku scene too. I broke it down to 2 seperate clips because I wanted a seperate nunchaku scene. I also downloaded Media Player Classic so I could play the clip in slow motion so I could see Bruce Lee's changes of grip. This stuff is Great!!

Though I have learned alot this snow weekend (I live in NJ), I still can't edit these clips. I'll have to hunt for a REAL MPEG editer at another time. Thanks again.

DVDx is a sweet little program! :D What kind of editing do you need? BTW If you want to study it in detail you are better off ripping it as an AVI to preserve quality ('sides AVI editing, IMHO is a lot simpler :P)

I wanted a MPEG editor because I wanted more control over where I was going to cut the ripped clip. Using DVDx I had to guess the number of frames I wanted by the time it takes to encode. I calculated a one second to encode per second of video. It was pretty close but wasn't exact. I'll try the AVI route and see if it's any easier. Thanks!

Well If you used a Real Mpeg editor like Mpeg2VCR you will be able to edit up to the Exact Frame you want and it only takes a couple of Minutes to render a edited Mpeg file useing a Proper Mpeg editor, So Make check into Mpeg2VCR, if you can"t find it them PM me with your e-mail and I"ll try to find it for you...Cheers
