Wii Dvd Drives - Work on any region?

I found the dvd drive from a wii that has the DMS chip in it, and want to buy it for modding.

My question is:

If i buy it, will it work on any wii? (USA/JAP/PAL)

I was thinking that the dvd drive had nothing to do with what region a wii is from, but i could be completely wrong.
