I am a newbie but have diligently first tried Doom9. ScubaPete's and about 60 stickys/threads/articles here (and SOME of "doesn't anyone use the guides before posting "how-to" questions?," LOL), but forgive me if I still end up covering trite old ground and just point me, thanks.

After being burglarized of my entire DVD collection I've decided to make DVD-Rs hence. I have DVDShrink 3.2 and Roxio Creator Plus. (Yes, I gather that Nero is the conventional way to fly, but I hoped to avoid even further expense.) Here is my first experience. I'm going to describe a failure, and it may be that the best solution is a guess that the media just sucks, but hopefully I will learn much with your help. Note: Desktop XP with only 384 Meg! NAV was running!

After analysis and unclicking foreign lang. subs and audio I specified an empty folder c:\foo and left the checkbox for the Audio/Video subdirs. DVDShrink created about 4.4 gig worth of files in VIDEO_TS\ including VOBs and IFOs (no ISOs).

0. I read conflicting info about DVDShrink being unable to decrypt newer movies. Maybe I should bail out on this thread right now!! Could I please have a simple example explaining this? (i.e., the symptoms, where I should then slide over to DVD Decrypter?)

1. Roxio (Build 2.4, 2005) option Copy / "Burn Image" seems to want a single .ISO or .gi or .udi which I don't have. Did I choose unwisely when DVDShrinking?

2. Given that failure, I chose Data / "Data disk" and selected all 22 files in VIDEO_TS and let it run. It ran for 10 minutes, had been at least halfway with the progress bar, but died with
Sense: 05 ASC: 26 ASCQ: 00 (Command 55)

while burning to a "GQ" brand, 4.7G 4X DVD-R (the folder size was 4.68 billion bytes). Explorer shows 0 bytes used. DOS won't permit going G:. Used 48/12/8X TDK IndiDVD internal burner.

So was choice 2. destined for failure anyway? IOW, can you just copy those files onto a DVD and it becomes a playable DVD?

3. At this point I reopened the "Data disk" option and it states "The disk in drive G: is appendable. Do you want to load the contents of this disk into your project?" (Yes / No messagebox) Should I do so? Or try another one and bite another 80 cent loss? Or, again, is this the wrong way to back up a DVD movie? For movie backup must I use .ISO, or can I just copy the 22 files?

Thanks so much for all of you participants. I have learned plenty already from browsing here. Dammit that was a long post. Sorry!

P.S. http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/...rink_page_3.cfm suggests that I simply could have chosen image recorder - okay.

The data disk format won't work for DVDs. In DVD Shrink, under Edit -> Preferences... -> Preferences tab, select Custom under the Target Size dropdown menu and then enter 4350 in the MB box. After clicking the Backup! button in DVD Shrink, select ISO image as the Backup Target. This will create an ISO image file that can be burned to a blank DVD with your Roxio program or with, my preference, ImgBurn, a free program that's likely the best burning engine around.

Neither DVD Shrink nor DVD Decrypter can handle newer copy protection. Either use DVDFab HD Decrypter (free) or use AnyDVD (free 21-day trial) running in the background with DVD Shrink or DVD Decrypter.

Here is some basic info for backing up Dvds that you own. Dvd Decrypter & Dvd Shrink will still work even on some of today's movies, but you might as well get into the habit of using these other programs, because sooner or later you will need them. Everything I show you will be free. DvdFab HD Decrypter, Full rip to your hard drive. Run the output from DvdFab through Dvd Shrink, taking out everything you don't want by unchecking the boxes, because you are trying to get that compression reading 70% or above for single layer. Save as an ISO or Hard Disc Folder. ISO you would burn with ImgBurn, (Dvd Decrypter's burn engine updated), in ISO Write Mode. Your hard disc folder you would burn in Build mode with ImgBurn, guides onsite at ImgBurn Forum. I use another upfront program which uses Dvd Decrypter, but I don't know if you can mention it here, but I have used DvdFab once lately & know it works.

Thank you for newbie tolerance. Both responses were crystal clear and short and specific. Unanimity regarding ImbBurn is also a relief to see, after being overwhelmed with so many other choices. I'll get on that for my next try, instead of Roxio.

BTW I can appreciate the lack of love for Roxio out there. I had an issue with Easy CD and their response was "we don't support Adapatec products that came bundled with hardware purchases." (Meanwhile I haven't seen a peep of complaint about DVDShrink, AnyDVD, ImgBurn, and others.)

Hmmm - in researching I didn't pay close attention to dates and maybe I should have, as many are pre-2005 and rave on DVD Decrypter. Yet post-2005 articles still focus often on it. Do I understand correctly that it is no longer "legitimately" distributed, but is still discussed ostensibly for the benefit of those who continue to use their older copies?

I'm off on Christmas travels but I'm very pleased with these responses and will be back!

Just for completeness since I brought all this up in the above exercise, Roxio did say it was an appendable disk with 24Mb left. So WTH, I went ahead and hit Finalize on Roxio. Te first time he said "you're doing data disk - finish that first." The next try, he crashed ("Mediahub") though Microsoft generously offered to make out a report :)

As to the latest post, perhaps I was simply overdue for a reboot.

All of the suggestions and helpful instruction you two made were great. I've succeeded with both DVDShrink and with DVDFab feeding DVDShrink for the rip, and Roxio worked out on the ISO burn.

FWIW, the original problem appears to have just been media. GQ has succeeded on 4 of 5, happening to frisbee-ate the very first one (whoda thunkit, causing greatest confusion, eh?). Yes, I have heard tales that they can degrade in a couple of years, too. At any rate Sonic/Roxio so far is seemingly sufficient, so I haven't needed ImgBurn yet; but that advice too is noted and well appreciated.
