asked many times so read here on the forums. Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim is the best you can get. and the difference between the DVD dash R and the DVD plus R is the structure. some say the DVD plus R are better I find the DVD dash R format is the most compatible with DVD players, read this info

I also have had better luck with DVD-R's. I've found them to be more compatible in all the players i use.
As Zoso said, there are quite a few threads on this topic already. Feel free to use the search bar for futher info.

To handle this problem, the latest DVD+R standard specifically authorizes to write a zero Book Type for compatibility reasons, and nowadays many drive manufacturers have made this bit programmable. But this cannot be done for DVD-R(W), as the Book Type (with several other information in the lead-in) are pre-embossed (i.e. pre-recorded) on blank media. Note however that although it reduces compatibility, this pre-recorded Book Type also improves copy-protection security, as it enables any player to easily identify a DVD-R(W) disc.

From that review, it seems that players can identify the DVD-R and think, "hmm, this tastes like a...a copy" and spit it out;
That is where the booktyping capabilities of the DVD+R comes handy and gives the +R some extra points; if you booktype them to DVD-ROM, the player will be fooled and think that you served him an original disc.
In my case, I have players that choke on DVD-R, they do the same with DVD+R(when left DVD+R), but never fail, not once, once I booktype the DVD+R to DVD-ROM.
Just something to consider, bluejet. You can read numerous threads about the booktyping advantage of the +R format.
The conclusion of the article:

And although some serious efforts have been put in the latest revisions of the - format to fix some of the original problems (at the cost of a much increased complexity), it still remains technically inferior to +, due to some intrinsic weaknesses (e.g. pre-pits).

Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim.

Plus or Dash? That's up to your burner and all the stand alone players, game consoles, and pc dvd drives that you plan on those backups to be played on. Those drives that will play your backups will tell you which flavor they prefer,or else you'll see an error message like:

No disc
Dirty Disc
Wrong format
Wrong region
Illegal Disc

Also brands of dvd rw drives may also favor a certain format:

NEC and Pioneer-definitely the dash format.

Booktyping drives like benq,plextor,liteon,lg-Definitely the plus format.

I don't know about Pioneer, but there is excellent support for NEC burners, modified firmware, which will allow booktyping, region free, unlock speed.... I've had a NEC for a little over a year, have been feeding it +Rs and booktyped them to DVD-ROM.Not one playback issue.

My dad's got a picky Sherwood player. It would not play the dash format from my khypermedia and benq burners. My older bro had a movie on a dash format "staple's Cmag" from his pioneer. That sherwood had no trouble reading it.

Of the 5 backups he brought over for christmas eve,1 had a PO total of 124,000 and a 0 nero score.Unrippable to a pc dvd-rw drive, but not a tv dvd recorder. He doesn't think it makes a difference what brand of discs you use.I've never seen 1 PO error on any of my scans:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Unique Disc Identifier : [DVD-R:CMC MAG. AM3]
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Disc & Book Type : [DVD-R] - [DVD-R]
Manufacturer Name : [CMC Magnetics Corp.]
Manufacturer ID : [CMC MAG. AM3]
Blank Disc Capacity : [2,298,496 Sectors = 4.71 GB (4.38 GiB)]
---------------------------------------------------------------------

BTW: That backup looked ok on my magnavox dvd player as I skipped around/FF/and reverse.Dvd shrink and dvd decrypter gave the usual crc error at the 81% mark. He also uses sticker labels, and whatever the cheapest he can find.

He picked up those staple's brand just because they had a free thumb drive in the spindle, LOL. He said the saleman said they were very good. I'm surprised they weren't MBI. I even emailed him that ugly pic of his backup disc. I've warned him about cheap crappy media and sticker labels, but he won't listen.
