I just purchased and installed a DRU-510A internal IDE DVD RW drive for my Sony PCV-RX270DS. The PC has Windows XP Home on it with 384MB RAM. The DVD read only drive I replaced was a Pioneer DVD-ROM DVD-115R.

The installation appeared to go fine but when I try push the eject button right below the drive or either one of the two buttons on the front of the DRU510A drive I do NOT get the disc tray to open up so I can put a disc in the drive. I hear no movement from the DVD drive.

I tried to go into My Computer and a Drive F appears that is called DVD-RW Drive. When I try to open it I get a "Please insert disk into :Drive F" message. When I hit the eject on the same menu, I do hear the DVD drive make two movements but the disc tray still does not open.

The only anomaly I had in the installation process was this. The original (Pioneer) drive for this Sony PC had 5 settings (5 pairs of pins) for the environment jumper settings with the connector on the rightmost pins. The DRU-510A and the manual show only 3 settings. I assumed that rightmost must be "Master" so I placed the connector on the DRU-510A on the rightmost of its three settings, or "Master" according to the instructions.

I also downloaded the Sony Drivecheck utility from your web site but that didn't work because I needed to put a blank disc in the drive, which of course I can't. Drivecheck does recognize that a DRU-510A is installed and says it is firmware 1.0c.

What do I do? The installation instructions are very, very limited

Check to make sure your 4 pin power cable is firmly attached. Also verify your settings match your IDE cables. If your Sony is on the end of the cable it would be master. if it's on the connector in the middle of the cable, typically it would be slave. I have the same burner and on top it gives you a diagram for the drive as to which jumpers are slave and master. If all checks out you may have gotten a bad drive.

You can't be too careful with jumper settings, though i'm pretty sure these daze all the jumper settings are the same for optical drives.

You didn't install DLA did you? I know that won't allow you to open the drive without right clicking on the appropriate icon and clicking eject.

Actually that would only happen if you had a DLA formatted dvdrw in the drive.

Are you in america, because my dru510 only has the one button under the actual tray, though the tray does have 2 vertical buttons on the tray iteslf that aren't buttons, you're not pressing those by any chance? :)

If i were you i'd grab a paperclip and manually open the drive with the power off, then start the machine with the drive tray open. Once it closes during bootup, try to open it in windows as normal.

Let us know how it goes.

I finally determined the problem. The physical opening in the chasis for the new Sony drive does not allow the front plate (bezel Sony calls it) of the disc tray to come through. They are sending me an adapter kit. Amazing, the Sony drive is incompatible with the Sony computer.

I ran into the same problem on my vaio, I had installed an Optorite burner and the button on the face didn't seem to work unless I pressed it really hard. At the time I was regreting not getting the Sony DRU 510...I have a Pioneer A-06 now, and it works perfectly!
On my Vaio, pushing the button presses against a little plastic block wich then presses the button on the drive. What a setup!
