Can't log into XBOX Live

Joined XBOX live Christmas eve and played for about an hour. Next day said I had to recover name. Went through recovery and got almost to end. Accepted terms and then it loads about 1/2 way. Then I get can't connect to xbox live make sure storage device is connected and you are connected to internet. Both of which I am. Went through tests all passed NAT says strict. 800 told me this was the cause (I told them I didn't think so). Finally today I took the console to a friend's house. Tests all passed NAT Open. Same result. I was able to recover name on his console. I then switched hard drives. With mine on his console it said storage device full. So I figured I had a hard drive problem. Then I put his drive on my console and got the same can't connect message from the day before. Any thoughts? Could I have a console and a hard drive problem??
