media won't finalize, content lost?????

I recently purchased a Gateway recorder (DVD+R) and a few blank media (Sony).
I followed the instructions on hook-up formatting, etc. I went to record my first show that happened to be a once-in-a lifetime show (that's why I bought the recorder) and all seemed well until I went to "finalize" the disc. The player wouldn't recognize the disc. It asked for the disc to be inserted. I went back to the Gateway store and told them of the problem and they said it was probably the media. Anyway, is there anyway I can preserve the show? While recording, the player timer was going, and the disc now has "the look" of buring activity. I tried the disc in another player but again the player won't recognize the disc. I'm afraid that if I send the disc into Sony, they'll replace the blank disc, but that won't help me with the lost show. More info: the tech at Gateway saw "bumps" along the edge of the disc and said that was unusual. Any help is appreciated.
