I am also looking for some type of system that is best for a PS2 version 7, to play copies. I have been searching the internet but have not found a site that is uptodate with their site and that looks to be trusted. Been looking at modchip.com but have read some bad reviews recently about them delivering. Having trouble determining best way to go to accomplish this modding (which modchip,DMS4,or swap disc) for my version 7. Any helpful words appreciated.

my 2 cents....
I've also been looking for a DMS4, but seems hard to find. I finally found www.modchip.com that still sells them. It looks like the PS2 stuff was all more popular about 2 years ago. Maybe this will help.....

DMS4 chips are a little flakey...
I would go with a Crystal Chip or a Matrix Infinity. If you just want to play your backups, the Duo 3 Ultra works well. All three chips are very reliable....The DMS4 chips are known to fail. The makers of the DMS4 don't support their chip anymore either. Their web site has been overrun with spammers.
Go with www.foundmy.com and you should be enjoying your chip in 2-5 days.

Thanks for the advice Stabby. I think I made a mistake buying from www.modchip.com and wish I'd gone with www.foundmy.com. I was interested in the DMS4 to run Toxic OS and that was the only place I could find it. Oh well, I'll just have to wait and hope it eventually shows up.

Please don't say that about Modchip.com- I just ordered a DMS4 on Jan 10! Where can you download 3rd party flash updates?

I got my shipping confirmation on Jan 2 and I'm still waiting. I'm still optimistic that it will show up, but we'll see. I tried emailing them a few days ago to ask what was up, and haven't heard back. If my DMS4 ever shows up, I'd also be interested in any third party software people could recommend.

The chip showed up on Wednesday, but now I can't get it to work. I have installed and removed it twice so far. I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong, or it's defective. I've been hunting the net for people talking about installing DMS4's and sounds like many people have had problems with them. The first time I got the black screen of death, though it seemed to power up and spin the DVD for a bit. The second time it wouldn't power up; led turns green for about a second and then back to red. The PS2 (V14) still works fine after pulling it back out, so no damage was done. Needless to say, the whole thing has left me a bit discouraged. One thing that I realized this morning is that I connected the wire that the instructions say is only needed for the Japanese model. Maybe this would prevent an American version from running. If anybody has any advice or pictures showing where they mounted their modchip, it would be greatly appreciated. And good luck to everybody else who is waiting for a package from modchip.com. It took a while, but mine did finally show.

Tracer,
Ya, the DMS4 does have a reputation for being flakey. But I would try one more time with it. Tin all pads on the chip and mother board points first. Use a little flux on the points to be soldered. Take you time soldering the wires.
Once you got done istalling, did your originals work? Or did you just try backups? The DMS4 does not come pre flashed. You will need to flash it with a hacked bios like Toxic.
If you don't get it to power up after installing the chip, then it is probably your bios points. The bios is what tells the PS2 to boot. Make sure you don't have any solder bridges or shorts.
If it boots, and nothing plays or it gives you the red screen saying to insert a PS2 disk, your DVD/CD points aren't soldered correctly, or aren't soldered well enough. Those are the smallest points to solder to. With those points, Depending on the version, the copper vias may be covered with solder mask, a green overlay over the copper for insulation. Use a razor knife to gently scrape off the solder mask, exposing the bright copper. Don't scrape too hard or you'll scrape off the via. Just enough to expose the copper undernieth. Once that is done, add a little flux to the via and tin it so you have a little silver circle. Now take your wire, tin it, then add flux to the silver circle and the tinned wire. Use your soldering iron to heat the via and ease the wire INTO the hole. About a 1/16 of an inch will do. Once you remove the soldering iron, your solder joint should be good to go.
Make sure you lay all wires flat against the board and use a little hot glue to secure them. Electrical tape works fine too. Also, make sure that none of your wires are over 4 inches long. Wires that are too long will cause noise and the chip will not function properly.
I hope some of this helps you with your installation. If not, hit me up on msn messenger, stabby209 , maybe I can suggest something in real time.
Have a great weekend!!!

Thanks for the advice Stabby. It didn't want to boot anything. There was no Playstation Logo, no sound, just black screen. The DVD did spin and the laser moved moved back and forth a couple times, but then nothing. The LED stayed green too. Pressing any controller buttons ad no effect. I assume I have to get past this stage before I can flash Toxic. Which points are for the bios? I did it like you are suggesting with the vias. A little scraping and tinning, then poke the wire into the via without overheating the board, but enough to get a good solder connection.
I'm still wonderig if applying the V point on an American version will prevent it from booting properly. The instructions say Japanese system only, but I forgeot until after it was all pulled back out again.
Thanks again Stabby, I will be heating up the iron later today!

Tracer,
Your bios points are J, K, M, N, D, E, F, G, H, I.
If you solder one wire to the wrong pin, she wont boot. Double check you have all of those wires in the right spot. Also make sure there are no solder bridges on that chip. Once those points are correct, it should boot. If it doesn't, the chip may be bad. Especially if your console boots fine without the chip installed.
In my days of fitting this perticular chip, I have had 5 bad ones. If that's the case, you should be able to send the chip back for a replacement. But you may want to change chip brands. I would go with a Crystal Chip 2.0 Pro SLE or the Matrix Infinity Green Dot.

So I now have only the points you mentioned in the previous post wired, and also power/ground,everything on the left side of the modchip: A, B, J, K, M, N, D, E, F, G, H, I. I'm not sure if it's supposed to be able to run this way or not, but it does the same thing as the first time I tried. The DVD will spin up, the laser will come on, it starts to read the disk, then nothing. The screen stays black the whole time. No sound, no playstation logo, nothing. The LED does stay green and will reset when the butto is pressed. It seems close to being alive, but no picture. I've also tried booting DEV modes with memento, but that doesn't do anything either. I can't measure or see any shorts anywhere. Since I'm already half wired, I'm going to wire the other half and see if that helps. If not I guess we'll see if modchip.com will issue a refund. (is that the sound of evil laughter?) Thanks again for all the assistance Stabby.

You are very welcome, Tracer. If once the other points are soldered and you still get nothing, contact modchip.com. They should backup what they sell.
If not, try the crystal chip or the matrix infinity.
