We recently reported that a press release published by Digital Music News claimed that Limewire, the popular P2P program, was installed on over one-third of all home PCs; 36.4 percent to be exact.
TorrentFreak however, citing the raw data from which the press release was built upon, is saying that DMN actually misinterpreted their data and the real install base is just under 18 percent.

how could anyone install that garbage!
frostwire has a nice removal of spyware, which is good. But, i'll stick to newsgroups. Safe, somewhat, although they are the next target.

K,now enuff is enuff. I've been using Lime wire for some time now and I can say there IS NO SPYWARE INSTALLED. For you doofuses who seem to have your heads where the sun don't shine and insist you get viruses from Limewire, let me ask you this are you downloading programs that are 700 - 900 kb in size? If so those are VIRUSES or infected toolbars. Also if you don't scan the files after you bring them in then it's your own fault if you get a virus. Don't blame the program blame the user and in a lot of cases of those 700 - 90 kb files you can also blame the clown who uploaded them. Unlike KaZaA which was full of adware and virus laden programs I've not gotten one from LimeWire so stick that in your pipe and smoke it.

I agree. There are certain things that Limewire does very well. I've been using Limewire since the demise of kazaa (in addition to other programs) and once you learn the "ins and outs" of the search results you know what to look for. You don't download "Live free or Die Hard" that's 298Kb and expect it to be the full movie and not a virus. Not to mention the ability to look up files easily and conveniently with Bitzi.

Limewire comes with its own Spyware! Thats what everyone complains about.
Of course material you download could have malware. Thats true with everything, not just P2P.
You completely missed the point of the argument.

Best bet is to use emule with the MorphXt mod. Failing that, Usenet is the best place for "acquiring" stuff, provided you dont mind spending an hour learning how to use a newsreader.

P2P is a load of crap now! Bittorrent is the way to go.
Limewire has got to be the worst P2P out of all of them, its has so much crapware with the program.
Get something called Frostwire, its exactly like limwire but theres no free and paid version. Theres just one FREE version without all the crap that limewire has.

What bloody point. All I've seen in this thread is a bunch of clowns whining about LimeWire having spyware. It's posted right on the website that it doesn't contain spyware. It looks to me like these guys have never used LimeWire in their lives and are only goin by word of mouth from some one who downloaded a virus cause he got the wrong size file and didn't scan it before he installed. This whole whiny thread reminds me of the windows vs linux debate and which is better. Some people are crack brained on the subject claiming that there are no viruses that go after linux, but there are. It's like anything else each product has its' fans and it's detractors what you use is your choice no one else's.
I've downloaded programs right from the legit website that's had a virus installed at the factory so I know about viruses and how they can show unexpectedly. But this bunch act like a bunch of kindergardeners when the teacher's out of the room

The argument is rather pointless..
The trouble with limewire (and e-mule, e-donkey, morpheus and all the rest) is the way they work.
You are authorising a wide open share on your pc (some morons just share C:.. everything).. open to the world and his dog. Anythying in that folder can be viewed and downloaded by anybody, the mpaa/riaa.. anybody. Browse host?? open door.. Chat with host.. yeah go on.. open me a 2 way port with dcc capabilities why not??
As it comes direct from your IP to the downloader they have you.. lock stock and barrel if it ever comes to court. Trying to plead ignorance of who put the material there is no defence (as seen with a recent $220,000 fine for a sharer.)
Then there are the unscrupulous users (people like me.. heh heh heh) who have some lovely self installing hidden p2p/ftp software (malware/virus.. call it what you want.. to people who control these things they aren't malware) we want to install on your machine so we can share our criminal content material around our friends...
Simple.. we pack it up nice, with all it's buttons pressed, call it soemthing lovely and tempting like "britney_nude12/07" and put it in a share folder, possibly on some unsuspecting n00bs machine that has already been exploited, and wait for it calling home as people download it and click it to look at the avi or jpg or whatever it is.
There is a little trick (not telling) which will download it to you without you even doing any more than browse the file. Nice huh?
Now on torrent sites this method doesn't work too well.. users can comment, and believe.. they report virus/malware quick enough....
That's why not to install and use limewire or any of the other outdated p2p applications.

the fact is that p2p sharing programs are on the outer and torrents are the way to go. The sharing has not changed just the means of sharing.

Bit Torrent?! That piece of overrated garbage. I tried to download something the other night for a friend, a small file only 58 KB in size and it was going to take over two days to get it. I finally found it online at another site and downloaded it and it only took 15 seconds.
And if you were one of the infantile fools that like to insert viruses to infect other's computers then you made a big mistake admitting it. Cause all I'd do is block your domain from my computer. I don't believe limewire is outdated, but being wrongly used by morons with no sense of judgment or common sense in their infantile skulls. That being said in my opinion enough is enough.
End of conversation.

All those 100MB torrents downloading in 10 minutes and 4+ gigs in a couple hours don't seem overrated to me. Maybe I'm a moron with no common sense, because I thought torrents were always large downloads.
I know I wrongly used limewire when someone convinced me to look for their crap music with it. I installed it and it wouldn't connect to the network. Gave me some error messages that seemed to be trying to goad me into shutting down my firewall./rant
I think I'll delete limewire and figure out newsgroups.

Excuse me?? Are you hearing yourself? Using Limewire is asking to get sued, plain and simple. We understand (after your multiple spam posts) that you love Limewire, thats fine, but DO NOT try to say that its better than Newsgroups, BitTorrent, Warez or any other safer and faster method of file sharing. Enjoy downloading files from the MPAA and RIAA at slow speeds :)

Quite possibly.. If you think it did nothing then please check for hide.exe lurking well down in a hidden directory below system32. (just possibly you have the true stealth version which will be running a random svchost from somewhere else than system32)..
See.. I'm nice really.
Anyway.. to continuing limewire users.. Look forward to see your names in the "busted and fined monster amounts" section in your local paper.
Personally I would rather go to jail for something worthwhile, like armed robbery, or online mulit million $$ fraud (especially as they usually don't ever trace the money) than get a couple of years for some stupid songs they play over and over on the radio all day. Because I wouldn't pay any extortionate fine, or settle with the a-holes who are ripping us all off.
