It's unbelievably annoying. Almost anytime I have a slightly scratchy/dirty disc that causes some skipping or stuttering, 9 times out of 10 it'll eventually freeze up the entire computer and I have to reboot.

It happens more so on Cyberlink PowerDVD which is a little too sensitive to disc impurities, but I notice it on WMP and MediaPlayer Classic too.

Sometimes the disc won't eject out of the drive without rebooting, why is it any problem with the DVD drives just freezes the computer like a kick to the nuts?

Btw I have 2 DVD+R/RW drives:
GSA-H20L
GSA-4167B
Both are LG

If that makes any difference.
Any help appreciated :)

yeah, thats a real bitch. Firstly, i had an lg drive for awhile. It sucked! Was very temperamental. Generally, lg puts out some good stuff, but not optical drives. For the money, lite-on rocks. for like $30us, you can get a 16x dvd burner, dual format, dl, raw read, etc. Everything you need in a good dvd-r drive. (newegg is a trusted online store)
Second, when the thing freezes up, dont screw with it. trying to ff or close it out while it hangs will only piss it off more. If it wont come back, call up the task manager, and end it from there. that will almost always do the trick.

Well the GSA-H20L is actually quite a good drive, it's 16X speed too, DL+R/RW, supports RAW data and subchannel data, all that shit and burns fine; but yeh their just too damn sensitive and twitchy.

And the firmware's a real bitch to update.

Btw when I say freeze up I mean completely, sometimes I can't open up task manager at all.

Might be a bad idea to throw another drive in, just to see what happens.

cuz it is possible the lgs are choking with small read errors. thats really not normal(system crash). If you put in another drive(temp), you confirm/eliminate the culprit. U got dma enabled on yer ide channels?

Oh right.. sorry.

Yeah DMA's enabled.

I don't really have any spare DVD drives lying around, I've got an older Ricoh CD-R/RW though, would that work?
