I've never tried...but I think your best bet would be to try using the Media Center function. If you don't have a Media Center PC I'm pretty sure I've seen some hacks that accomplish the same thing (browse the forums I know I saw something here).

In my opinion putting DVD rips onto the Xbox HD is a waste of space (assuming someones figured out how). Even with an Elite you'll only be able to fit 30 movies or so on there...assuming you don't have any game saves, demos, arcade games, etc.

I know I didn't answer your question...but I do think it'd be simpler to go about it this way.

Guide on how to stream movies to the 360 without Media Center. Knew I saw it here.

I agree with the guy above me. You'd be better off ripping a dvd on your computer as a MP4 file and then just streaming that to your 360. Be sure that the MP4 is within there spec:

- Multiple audio track will make it unusable
- Only LC stereo audio
- Subtitles can be in the file, but you can't access them.

I had been backing up all my DVDs to H.264 in MP4 via Nero Recode, and the majority of them don't work due to 5.1 audio or multiple audio tracks. I'm hoping that in the future, MS will actually give us MP4 implementation that can use the features that make MP4 a good container, rather than an implementation that can't handle all the things that make MP4 a good container.
