About 6 months ago the DVD-Rom died in my PS2. I want to get a new drive. But I've looked everywhere. I usually just give up because it seems impossible.
But enough is enough. I have a bunch of games I want to play and I'm tired of waiting.
If anybody knows where I can buy a DVD Rom (the entire unit) for an old style PS2 I would really appreciate it.
If not, I will buy a used one at Gamestop- even though they are really overpriced.
I'd suggest buying the parts from a mod store or ebay, check around..
Personally, I'd rather buy another PS2 on e-bay, it's around the same, and you don't hassle with opening the ps2, risking breaking it, and all that other stuff.. And I've seen the fat ones go for 30-40$ without shipping (maybe 50-60 shipped?)
Sorry I couldn't help more..
Thanks for the responses guys. I'd be more than willing to spend $120 on a new PS2. But mine is modded. I can't solder. So I would have to pay someone to mod the new one for me. It's not really worth it.
I also have the network adapter and a hard drive full of games- so the slim wouldn't be a good unit for me anyway.
I've looked on Ebay and half.com After shipping it's a wash.
Ouch.. If its modded then maybe looking around to find the part is the better bet, provided you know how to put it in..
Another new premodded ps2 might run you over 240$, and modded ps2's on ebay end at 120$+ without even saying which modchip they have installed..
If you can find the part on a site (usually modchip sites sell every MAJOR part..), thats the cheapest way.
If you have a mod-chip install shop near, then I'd suggest to buy a used fat ps2 that still has the warranty sticker on it, bring it to the shop along with a modchip, and have them professionally install it..
Best of luck, hope you can find a site.
EDIT:
I've been told www.craigslist.com and www.sell.com have people who sell modded ps2s/ps2 parts..
Or if you find the part is too much, why not just find the model system that you have, look on e-bay for a similar version, and if you know where the part is, buy a working system (Or a system with a dead laser? Might save you 20-30$..) and take the part out yourself.
