VLC Transcode DVD to .mp4

Hello,

I am trying to transcode a DVD to .mp4. I plan on using the .mp4 to stream to my ps3/apple tv. It will be streamed from a Linux media storage machine.

I tested VLC transcoding for about 30 min and then played back the .mp4 and all seemed well (audio and video). When I went for the gusto and let the transcoding complete I could no longer play back the .mp4. I checked the VLC log messages and it looks like it kept trying to transcode the audio (a52) and it was not working. The message that kept coming up was...

cannot create packetizer output (a52 )

The settings I did the transcoding were:

Video - MP4 encapsulation, h.264, mp4a (AAC) and thats it.

Why would the test work but after it complete the file is no longer readable? I really do not want to wait til a few seconds are left in the transcode and then stop it just so that I preserve the file. There has to be a reason right?

Any ideas? Any suggestions on better transcoding? Better options?
