1. I have a Philips-Liteon burner, where/how can i get the modded firmware?
2. i am banned from xbox live as i was caught with a modded xbox, will i still be able to ftp from the xbox (i have smartFTP client 2.0)?
3. i did not mod the xbox myself, so i have never ftp'ed from it, therefore i will have to get a modded dashboard, whats the best 1, and where can i get i from?
i have never made any backups myself, as a friend has always done it for me.
to answer all your questions, do some reading, you have no clue.
1. kreon firmware only works on a specific drive.
2.you can not ftp to your xbox 360.
3.there is no such thing as a modded dashboard.

as i did not mod the 360 myself, how will i know if the xtreme firmware has been installed? i can play backup games on the console, does this mean its been installed
are the games that you play on it stealth patched? if so than its not xtreme firmware its should be ixtreme, but in your case it doesnt matter, if its modded and banned you dont need the stealth ixtreme.
not sure what else you need to know, if its modded and banned all you can do at this point is play games offline, if you want to make your own backup you need a samsung drive flashed with kreon firmware, you can google to find out the models that work.
