I've been looling at various related threads for two hours and can't seem to understand what I'm reading.
I bought a used PS2 (and a bunch of games) from one of those game stores. I want to make copies of my games as, I have a 5 yo. son who likes to play with them.
However, I have no idea what a "fat" or "slim" PS2 is or if I have Mod. chip. Let alone how to make an ISO file.

I have used Shrink 3.2 and Nero to make copies of my DVD's for the same reason I want to make copies of my games.
Can someone point me in the right direction using language a computer challanged person could understand. Also, I'd like to be able to use freeware if it's available.

Thanks in advance.

The original playstation 2 is what people call the fat ps2, its around 3 times bigger then the ps2 available in the shops now, which is called a slimline pstwo.

If you look at the pic above, the slimline is sitting on the fat ps2 beneath it.
(The main differences between the original ps2 and the slimline, are the size reduction, the slimline has a built in ethernet port for online gaming, and the slimline also reads disks a lot better than its predecessor).

A mod chip, if installed allows you to play backups/imported games.

Copy a ps2 game is straight forward, just pop the disk into your computer, and make a 1-1 copy using nero, and any other app you are comfortable using.

Thanks that clears up a few questions. I have a fat PS2. Is there a way to check if it's been modded? and if it hasn't, what do I need to do?

First thing is to check and see if the console has been opened before, to do this, look at the back of the unit near the power switch area, there should be a sticker on it, just like in the image below:

If it has been opened, it should read VOID in the background fo the sticker. Thats you first indicator that it has been opened. Then there might be a chance its modded. Where did you get the console from?

I picked it up used from Game Stop and I remember the guy saying the "void" sticker hadn't been touched. So, I'm guessing that it hasn't been modded. I thought I read that I could use some freeware if I didn't want to mod the PS2. Is this still available to do?

Yeah, I dont think game stop ever sell modded consoles, anyway, that means it not modded. What sort of freeware are you looking for, most homebrew apps, etc, require some form of modification to the console so that it plays copied disks.

I used Nero to burn a copy of the game but, the PS2 won't play it. What can I do to get it to play on the PS2?

You need to soft mod it, i.e buy something like swapmagic, which is a backup boot disk, or modify it by installing a mod chip.
