I am a total n00b just wanting to get into playing backups on my psp. how hard is it, and what do i need?

I have read the faq's around the site, but they look very complex. so could someone just simplify what i need please? is it something like?

Connect PSP via usb to pc
download whatever
run whatever
ready to go?

also, i'm on 2.81. can i still downgrade from that using 2.80 downgrader? sorry for being such a n00b
