Not sure if this is the place for this post. Can you play HD dvd's on a regular DVD player?

No, this isn't the place for this subject or No, you can't play HD dvd's on a regular dvd player?

I got a couple of HD dvd's for Christmas. I don't have a HD dvd player or a HD dvd TV so I knew I wouldn't get HD quality but I thought it would play.

I have just heard about Blue Ray in the last couple of days. Seems like this is another format and another player that might overtake the HD industry. Since I don't have anything yet, should I get a HD player, return my HD dvd's for regular dvd's, or should I see what the Blue Ray is all about and wait to see if this becomes the new standard???

I appreciate any help. It should be obvious that I don't know anything.

I thank you for your reply. I have been trying to be extremely clear and I will try one more time.

I am NOT expecting HD definition. I am merely HOPING for the same resolution.
Will a HD dvd play on a regular dvd player at the same resolution as a regular dvd on a regular dvd player?

i would keep an eye on both formats. but since currently blu-ray has 6 of 8 major Hollywood studios supporting it i went with blu-ray for now, i like it better than hd-dvd because of the movies that are available on blu-ray are better to me. but watch for warners decision at CES because that will be a vital company in order for blu-ray or hd-dvd to win. Hope you can make the right decision.

Peace

And P.S. unless there is a label on the HD-DVD that says it is dual format( which means that there is both DVD and HD-DVD content on the disc) than it will not play, sorry man but you either have to return them and buy it on regular dvd or buy an HD-DVD player. But usually , NO HD-DVD's will not work on a dvd player. unless stated otherwise.

I just wanted to thank everyone here. I guess I will return the HD dvd's for regular dvd's. My 31" Mitsubishi picture tube still has a great picture so I'm not ready to go HD TV yet nd with all the controversy surrounding HD vs Blue Ray there is no sense in my umping into a player right now.

btw I was never a big Eagles fan but a few years back I saw a lot of a live concert on dvd. I ask for and got for Christmas the Eagles Farewell Tour. I'm also one who has always preferred the sound quality of studio recordings of a band over their live concert recordings. This Eagles concert is by far the best sounding live recording I have ever heard. The video footage is spectacular and the group of old guys are on top of their game and never sounded better!!!!!! I highly recommend!
