.MKV Playback problem after install of Ace Mega Codec Pack

Thread title basicly explains, but in detail, here goes: I didn't have gspot, or an internet connection to get it, but I was having some avi playback problems, so I installed (off of a disc) Ace Mega Codecs Pack. Since then, my MKV's won't play in any direct show media player. All I get is a black screen. I've uninstalled the matroska pack, and also ffdshow. Before I didn't have matroska installed, just haali media splitter and ffdshow, as far as I'm aware. So, having uninstalled and reinstalled ffdshow, and the matroska codec, anyone have any advice? Don't know how relevant this may be but my computer is running win xp sp1 pro. Thanks for any advice I can get on this.

Just play your files iwht VLC Media PLayer.Much easier to use and play files with.

Either use VLC or MediaPlayerClassic, and instead of AceCodecPack I would recommend K-Lite Full Codec Pack. They're more regularly updated and contain far better quality codecs.

VLC still works, but I'm trying to get others to work. I need to get the codec problem solved though. Any idea of how to repair the damage ace did?

Completely uninstall Ace and clean your registry.
Get K-Lite: http://www.free-codecs.com/download/K_Lite_Codec_Pack.htm

It uses higher quality codecs and it's updated much more regularly. K-Lite+MediaPlayerClassic will let you play and convert around 98% of video formats out there.

Ok, I uninstalled all of ace mega codecs pack. Now, how do I go about cleaning the registry. I've done a little registry tweaking and such, but if I don't know what I'm looking for, I wouldn't know where to start. Any help to offer?

To clean up your registry just use Registry Mechanic or Glarysoft Regsitry repair.Both work very fine and you can find them using google.Just type in the name.

Here are some free ones that will get the job done nicely:

CCleaner

Tweak Now Reg Cleaner: http://www.download.com/TweakNow-RegClea...4-10262639.html

All straightforward to use. Once your done install K-Lite with the "recommended" installation settings, and that should do it. Don't fiddle around with the individual codec settings unless you really need to (i.e. Converting DivX files and so on).
