Trouble starting "Shadow of the Colossus" with AR Max Memory Card

I have had an AR Max Memory Card (32MB) ever since I bought my PS2, and I have never had any issues with it. All of my games have worked with it in the past. However, when I load the AR Max disk and then put in "Shadow of the Colossus," there is a little loading symbol in the bottom right hand corner and then the screen goes black. I took out the memory card and it said "No memory card(PS2) Inserted in MEMORY CARD slot 1. Shadow of the Colossus requires 320 KB of free space to save data," but I had already loaded the memory card and it WAS in slot 1...so I put the memory card back in and it just goes blank without bringing up a menu or anything. I took the memory card out again, and like when I tried to run the game without the memory card, the game works fine (however I can't save because this is my monly memory card). Since it works without the memory card, I know that the disk isn't bad...but something's going on. Is it possible that this specific disk is incompatible with the AR Max Memorary card....or is it something else? Any help would be appreciated...thanks!
