The Box PVR Installation problem - Format

I have just purchased a TheBox PVR and am having a problem with the installation.
I asked for a hard drive to be installed which was done but I believe that I now have to format it to get it to work. The box has poor instructions which tell me to hold the menu button down on the front of the box and then plug it in. This will show a green dash on the display which will turn to the word play and then a count up to 1 hundred when the format has finished. Unfortunately the green dash moves around the display but the process goes no further.
Can someone please tell me what I need to do to progress with this installation?
Anyone out there who has been through the installation can advise please?
