Bought New PS2 Controller - missing prong?

I just bought a brand new Sony PS2 controller from radio shack but one of the prongs (needle things) is missing. I tested it it out and all the buttons seem to work. I just wanted to know if the newer ps2 controllers are suppsoed to be missing a prong or something or is mine broke?

The controller I just bought from "Game Stop" (a "Game Stop"-branded controller) also has the missing pin. All seems to work fine, though.

I'm not sure of the controller pinout, but am **VERY** familiar with cabling, pinouts in general and whatnot -- it could very well have been an unnecessary ground wire. That extra wire would be extra 'real estate' in the cable itself, and therefore extra cost.
