pretty much what the subject says, when i first started ripping the dvds it took about a minute to analysis and roughly 30 to 35 minutes on average for the encoding. All of a sudden the analysis is taking 10 minutes and the encoding takes as much as 15 to 20 hours so i just cancelled it. I was taught how to fix this problem before by going into the control panel and going and doing something in the device manager. Can someone give me step by step on how to do this again? I also have windows vista if that makes a difference. Thanks

So what you're thinking is that your drive's DMA is off. I don't know if for Vista is different, but here is the link to turn DMA on:

If the DVD was not properly decrypted, if it still has junk, it could also make Shrink "hang". Check the Hard drive for Adware, Spyware... Crapware. Keep the HDD defragmented.
