when I press it in the center it does not light up. I tryed swicthing battey packs with people but no dice

then take it back to wherever u bought it if under warranty, or just buy a new one, sounds like it is shot.

one thing to try before you return it is to re-initialize it with the console. There is a little white button between the triggers on the controller and a round button on the front of the console with symbols that look sort of like )))))

press the one on the console then on the controller. Then try the controller again.

to be honest i do not remember if it needs to be on or not when you first initialize it. Has been a while since i had to do it. I mean if you have easy access to the store you bought it from and they will exchange it without hassle then why no. For me personally it is always a hassle as the nearest Best Buy/Circuit City is about 20 minutes and in an area with a ton of wacky trafic.

yeah, thats why he was selling it so cheap, it was broken. I noticed even used wireless controllers on Ebay go for at least $35 so just better off paying $50 for a new one. Wal Mart had third party corded ones for $25.

Personally i would just pay the little extra and get a true MS controller. I tried some of those "other" brands with PC, PS2 and my regular Xbox and a lot of them are just check crap. The only brand that you can really trust is Logitec, they make quality controllers, not sure if they make one for the 360 or not.
