Hi there

I recently acquired a LG HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GMA-4020B drive. It is fitted with the latest firmware driver (5.1.2535.0 - dated 7/1/2001).

I have been informed by the local LG Support Service that it will only write on slow speed DVD-RW format discs. However (despite using multispeed DVD- format discs), it will still not recognize them (with both Nero 6.3.1.20 and CDBurnerXP Pro 3). Please refer to a copy of the error message below.

[It does somewhat curiously write CD- format discs (with CDBurnerXP Pro 3) - so there is some degree of writing functionality present]:

It has been suggested to me that there might be a compatibility issue between the DVD burner driver and something else on my pc (possibly a system dll). Would anyone be able to provide me with some much-needed advice so that I can make full use of this (albeit old) device? Please note that I am not particularly "tech savvy".

With kindest regards

you have 2 instances of DMA off the said problem drive and a hard drive, so these must be enabled, by going to device manager locate the "ide controllers link and uninstall it! then reboot pc and go back and check DMA is enabled"

Disc Manufacturer: OPTODI - SCW004

very very very sad media, these should be burnt at the staek, hung drawn and quatered, then sent on a slow boat to china! think you get the message.

your project i noticed is very small, 66meg, just an observation... as not knowing the full project details.

CDR4_2K.SYS and Drivers\CDRALW2K.SYS are roxio drivers/software uninstall both as these bad boys conflict with nero something awfull! after uninstall get the Roxio ZAP tool to shred the registry of the bad boy left over files...

-----------------------

this file IdeChnDr.sys we will go into later, see if the above works first!

I have just started the process. I have located the two Roxio drivers and deleted them. Have you possibly got a link to the Roxio Zap tool - although I can easily Google this phrase?

when you say located you mean just those files above? or did you do a proper un-instalation?

I have located the following system files:

CDR4_2K.SYS and Drivers\CDRALW2K.SYS

I have sent them to my Recycle Bin. Should I rather restore them and try to open them and see whether I can uninstall them? Do I need a specific programme to open them?

I found the Roxy Zap tool and have used it and rebooted my system.

[Sorry for the possible mistake (and stupid questions) but I am not hugely tech savvy].

Btw: I have "refound" the first system file (again with Search Results) but (when clicking on it) get the message that Windows cannot open it. What should I do to try to uninstall it properly?

thats because it needs to be uninstalled properly from the control panel and add/remove programs tab, things like Roxio Easy Cd Creator software etc etc...

then use roxio zap.

if you done the above and this file is still there could need a reboot on pc, and then if still there due to curuption via deleting rather than uninstalling, then get a free app called UNLOCKER install this app right click on the file then delete it!

I have downloaded and installed UNLOCKER to (hopefully) permanently delete the two relevant system files. I then re-used the Roxio Zapper Tool and rebooted the system. I then uninstalled the IDE controller (Intel ....) and rebooted the system which need needed to be rebooted again for the new hardware to work properly.

However, by examining the F-drive (where the DVD Burner is located) the disc is still not being recognized by the system (as its capacity is still recorded as 0 Kbytes).

Therefore might there possibly have been an error in the "programmic" installation of the DVD Burner (which was rather quickly performed by a relative of mine)?

Can you please explain the pathway from System - Hardware that I must follow to check whether DMA is enabled and how this can be rectified (as this perhaps seems to represent the major underlying problem)? [Sorry for my ignorance in these matters]

How can I add a screenshot of my equivalent to your one - as the "Add image" button does not seem to work in the customary fashion (i.e. provide me a link to "My Pictures")?

The configuration is as follows:

IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers
Intel(R) 82801DB Ultra ATA Controller
Primary IDE Channel
Secondary IDE Channel

[These three entries are all at the same level and not a subset of the Intel Controller. Is this okay?].

To update nero, you have to do a clean install. Download Nero Clean Tool:

EDIT for bad link http://www.nero.com/enu/support-nero6-tools-utilities.html Follow the instructions under "More Details and Download". Then install the latest version of Nero 6:
