Okay so I may be out of luck here because I'm not the most techy person in the world and may just have the wrong equipment. So really, I just want to know what I can do to get the most out of what I have without spending more money asides from new cables etc;

This is what I have:

Sharp XR 10X Projector - Capable of 1080i HD - uses 2 VGA slots which double as component inputs via an adapter (no HDMI)

Pioneer 7.1-Channel XM Ready HDMI Receiver (VSX-917V-K)

Sony PS3

Right now I am only using composite cables for the audio and I know that's not getting me anything fantastic. I am under the impression that I can't get 7.1 surround without HDMI, is that right? If so, what do I do. I know that I can convert the HDMI signal to component with a 200 dollar adapter, but I don't really want to spend that much because it's not that important to me.

What is my best option without spending a ton of cash to get some decent surround sound out of this setup? Would a digital sound connection probably be my best bet? Any suggestions as to what I can do would be hugely appreciated.

Oh and also - I keep hearing about lossless audio etc; when reading forums on blu ray - now I'm pretty sure I probably didn't spend enough money on the reciever to get that kind of feature (and also I've heard that the PS3 isn't even capable of it anyway) but what is the best type of surround sound setting to use when watching a blu ray with the reciever I have and the setup I will hopefully have after all of this is over. I'm hoping to keep my spending to under $100 - but I am always open to hear what I can do with more. Thanks a ton.

Here's the back of my reciever

And the back of the projector

i cant tell what the little round audio output is(on projector) If it is a digital output, then you can get surround sound out of that. Only what is available from source media tho.(unless you upsample)

The projector has nothing to do with my audio setup. I only included it incase someone suggested HDMI because I don't want to buy the converter. My audio would go from PS3 to Reciever.

o... ps3 has an optical digital output(toslink) get the cable. it appears you have 2 optical inputs on your receiver. full surround capability over that connection

yes, you can get regular Dolby Digital 5.1/6.1, and DTS 5.1/6.1, using the optical (toslink) output from ps3 to receiver.

Only way to get the HD audio formats (lossless audio), is over HDMI, or the 5.1 analog outputs and inputs. Since your receiver doesn't have HDMI inputs that process the HD audio, and your ps3 doesn't have the 5.1 analog outputs, I'm afraid you're out of luck with that.
